Riding Day 1: to Salon-de-Provence
Tuesday September 19, 2006, 50 km (31 miles) - Total so far: 52 km (32 miles)
Day 1 at last!
Most of today turned out to be a good ride. Certainly an adventure…
Philippe made us the usual conti. breakfast, with a good discussion on cultureal differences, raising kids and the places he has worked as a cameraman. Their children are 18, ~14 and ~8 and have lots of opportunities set out for them, and an upbringing that gave them a doer’s mindset.
I almost can’t say enough nice about these folks. They went to the airport to get our bike cases for us, managed delivery of the bike frame, stored our parts, disposed of our cardboard, gave us good road and town tips, and offerd to back us up if needed. And the place was nice too!
So at last we’re on the road. To avoid going through the middle of Aix on our way out, we took a peripheral street across the south side, went north on a secondary street and exited town on D17 westbound. This road had moderate traffic and fairly wide lanes. We stopped in Eguilles for a bit of chow to hold us over until our meal stop at the zoo/chateau. A nice lady in the market struck up a conversation, asking us where we were from and if we liked our trip so far. And we finally repeated that modern miracle that still astounds me: we put a little piece of plastic in a machine in a foreign country, pressed some buttons and got out legal tender.
West of Eguilles the road became a secondary one - a real country road - and it was a delightful ride. It was gently rolling and lightly travelled, through open land and vinyards where we could smell the grapes that were almost ready to harvest. Read more
